Reimagining Tecovas' Digital Storefront

Reimagining Tecovas' Digital Storefront

Quarantine awakened the chef in many of us, including myself. What began as culinary experimentations turned into a daily habit of cooking. To share recipes with friends, I started a food diary on Notion. I religiously recorded every recipe, cataloged the ingredients, and noted useful cooking tips. Over time, my food diary evolved into an extensive recipe library.

Despite my love for Notion, it fell short in meeting my recipe categorizing needs. I envisioned a more streamlined tool that would allow me to:

  • Quickly import or jot down recipes

  • Organize my recipes efficiently

  • Generate shopping lists for missing ingredients

That's when it struck me—it was time to leverage my design skills and create the perfect tool myself!

Domain research

Based on secondary research, I discovered that consumers are increasingly cooking at home and turning to digital tools to streamline their meal preparation.

Consumers are shopping smarter

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped how Americans shop for groceries. In a New York Times article, Lizzie says, "It has made me a better planner and more aware of what I like to buy where. I am more purposeful about where I choose to shop."

WFH popularizes home cooking

An Acosta report reveals that 55% of shoppers have increased their home cooking since the pandemic began due to working from home and financial considerations. 43% of respondents plan to maintain this habit.

Tech propells the food industry

According to an analysis by Grocery Dive, the grocery industry has experienced a surge in app downloads. Major players are harnessing technology to redefine the customer experience and assist consumers in meal planning decisions.

Dissecting the user journey

I conducted interviews with participants in their 20-30s to understand their pain points around recipe bookmarking, shopping with a grocery list, and cooking with recipes.

Finding our differentiators

Based on my competitive analysis, I found that Paprika and Recipe Box offered basic functionalities such as recipe storage and sorting. Grocery took grocery shopping to the next level with its 'smart' grocery lists. Whisk focused on building community, while NYT Cooking only supported its own recipes. Each app had its own strengths and weaknesses.

All in all, Whisk stood out for its superior user experience. Interestingly, Whisk was the only free option. According to app store reviews, users were still on the search for the perfect recipe app.

I identified opportunity gaps including the need for robust recipe filtering, a streamlined method for generating grocery lists from recipes, and improvements to the overall UX.
